 November 2003 Meeting Minutes
ETRC Meeting - Dave & Nicki Stevens' house

Meeting sites- The future location site of meetings was discussed. Club members felt that meetings at other members houses would be best. The Dec. Mtg. site was discussed. The members decided that it would be a good idea to have a social meeting in December, possibly at the Italian Mkt and grill.

Officers- Chet Peterson asked to resign from the position of Vice President via e-mail. Mike Teague asked for volunteers to be V.P. Art Curl volunteered and was approved by the members present.

Future Topics- Suggestions were requested for presentations at future meetings. The following topics were submitted (1) pH, (2) calcium and alkalinity, (3) coral toxicity.

Lighting - Gould Smith gave a presentation about lighting the Reef Aquarium. Reef lighting needs to take two different qualities into consideration 1) the strenght of the light; 2) the spectrum of the light. The human eye sees green light the best. Violet light is very important for reef photosynthesis. The amount of light reaching lower areas of the aquarium is much less than apparent to the human eye. The strength of light is decreased by a square of the distance from the light source. The next discussion was related to the different Kelvin ratings of lighting. PAR is a common strength rating of light bulbs (larger number is more powerful). CRI is the color rendition of the light. It also appears to be important to have a dusk and dawn period with decreased intensity of lighting.
